Chestnuthill 250th

In 2013, we will celebrate the 250th year of the establishment of Chestnuthill Township (originally spelled as Chestnut Hill). Events are being planned throughout calendar year 2013 in cooperation with annual West End events, such as local carnivals, the West End Fair, Chestnuthill Park activities. Additional events are being planned.
The earliest known reference to Chestnuthill as a township was 20 September 1763, when Abraham Schmidt (aka Abraham Smith) was appointed township constable. Since its formation, the township has been sub-divided into four townships. Ross Township was split from Chestnuthill in 1817 and Eldred was split from Ross in 1851. Similarly, Polk was split from Chestnuthill in 1846.

Anniversary Committee

A 250th Anniversary Committee was formed in March 2012 to oversee the celebration activities. The local historical societies, township supervisors, and interested citizens are cooperating to make our collective celebration a success. The committee meets monthly. The date, time and location of these meetings will be posted on this website and distributed for publishing to local newspapers. A historical book is planned and information for the book, including photos is being collected. The committee is exploring alternatives to fund planned activities.

Meeting Schedule

Citizens of the West End are invited to join us and are always welcome at our meetings. As our elders said, ‘Many hands make work light’. We have been meeting at the Chestnuthill Municipal Building on PA 715, Brodheadsville on the 3rd Thursday of the month.
